It’s all in the preparation…
Earlier this year we headed away 0n our biggest adventure yet as a family, taking in the amazing cities of San Francisco and New York. We also had a little road trip to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks. Travelling with Taylor as a toddler could have been a bit of a nightmare but it’s all in the preparation.
Even the best-laid plans can go array, especially when airlines rip wheels off your luggage or break your buggy! However, the actual traveling you can try to make as stress-free as possible. Now that Taylor is older, he likes to have a say in what is packed. This can lead to tears prior to leaving the house as you unpack his entire toy collection, but at least by the time we leave he has chosen his favourites. A separate bag is packed full of snacks, clothes (spares for everyone) and of course a few extra toys.
Regardless of the endless amount of TV shows and movies you can now watch on flights, you can guarantee that the little people will want to watch something not available. That’s where Netflix Downloads comes into its own. That show which has captured their imagination for the last few days can continue to do so mid-flight or ease the tears in the back of the car. This saved us many times for near meltdowns.
Heres what we’ve got downloaded on the iPad and iPhone (good to have a back up)…
The Good Place
8/10 (Paul’s Score)
I’ve been a big fan of Ted Danson since the 80’s, watching his exploits as Sam Malone in Cheers every week as a kid. He’ll always be a comic to me, so it just felt wrong that he was in CSI. Well, all was forgiven when he appeared in “The Good Place”. He’s back to his funny ways and his character Michael just steals the show. The premise is based on The Good Place being the town where good people go to hang out for eternity once they’re lived long and rewarding lives. Only, there a few people who have arrived, who don’t quite fit their profile.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
10/10 (Anj’s Score as she cheated on me)
Yep, you read that right, Anj cheated on me. We started watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (UKS) together and both really enjoyed it. Then one night, whilst I was doing some OKE stuff, Mrs.D continued to watch it without me. I know right, married people didn’t have to put up with this betrayal back in the day eh? Anyhow, I digress. UKS is one of the funniest shows on Netflix. Basically, Kimmy is rescued from being held in a bunker for fifteen years. The show takes you on the journey of Kimmy in the real world and adjusting to New York City life.
9/10 (Paul’s Score)
I’m finally watching Ozark. It feels like this show has been out for months and I’m just getting around to watching it. Jason Bateman not only stars in it but he also directs this very dark comedy. The story is based around a financial advisor who just happens to be an expert money launderer for the second largest drugs cartel in Mexico. Due to certain indiscretions, he ends up having to move his family the Missouri Ozarks.
9/10 (Taylor’s Score)
Taylor doesn’t tend to watch many pre-school shows, alas Word Party is one which has him dancing around…even when he’s in his car seat. I do warn you now, you’ll have the Word Party song stuck in your head hours after the iPad has been turned off. It is a good show for teaching a few new words, as well as some pretty useful life skills.
9/10 (Paul & Taylor’s Score)
I think it’s nigh on impossible to watch Puffin Rock and not want to jump on a plane to Ireland. If you’re a fan of Chris O’Dowd then it’s another reason to watch this show, as he is the sarcastic Narrator…so hope Taylor picks up sarcasm. This animated show follows the adventures of Oona, her little brother Baba, and their family and friends on island off the coast of Ireland. So often this week I’ve heard Taylor laughing in the back of the car, as Oona gets up to mischief.
